About the event

Hip Hop Therapy is a term coined by Dr. Edgar H. Tyson in 1998. 'Hip Hop Therapy' refers to the purposeful use of Hip Hop culture in a therapeutic relationship.

Hip Hop HEALS and Birmingham Centre for Arts Therapies have received funding from The Baring Foundation to deliver Hip Hop HEALS' Trauma-Informed Training Academy, online via ZOOM.

THE TRAINING ACADEMY:

  • offers FREE ONLINE Trauma-Informed training
  • helps you deliver culturally competent arts & health workshops
  • applies arts in health modalities
  • has a strong focus on Hip Hop and UK Bass Music including Reggae, Dancehall, Jungle and Drum & Bass
  • is not therapy training
  • was co-produced through community consultation and world leading experts in the fields of Trauma-Informed Hip Hop; Hip Hop Therapy; Hip Hop Social Work; Hip Hop Public Health; Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes

WHO FOR?

We are aimed at Minority Ethnic people and all the youth/community workers; helping professionals and counsellors who work with us.

Places will be prioritised for people from Minority Ethnic backgrounds, due to our lack of representation in the arts and health profession: the reason our Academy was funded. All are welcome and we would love to accommodate you, if space allows.

We may be able to offer long-term practical support options i.e. free DBS; paid workshop delivery work experience plus a package of supervision. This is limited to people located in the West Midlands and subject to conditions.

You don't have to practice Hip Hop arts or know a lot about mental health and trauma to join us. Just get in touch to arrange a chat if you’re interested or unsure: hiphophealsuk@gmail.com.

On this course, you will learn through experiential training in a safe, therapeutic group setting. There are 3 phases in total. Phases 2 and 3 are optional.

PHASE 1: TRAINING (FULL ATTENDANCE REQUIRED)

PHASE 2: WORK EXPERIENCE (LIMITED PAID WORKSHOP DELIVERY EXPERIENCE)

PHASE 3: FREE SUPERVISION WITH BIRMINGHAM CENTRE FOR ARTS THERAPIES

We hope to offer CPD-certification for this course. This is subject to the accreditation board's decision. Attendees will be required to provide Emergency Contact details and commit to full attendance. A training contract will be issued with a course handbook, prior to the start date below:
